"I give this trip an A plus! It was a beautifully organized and everything worked like clockwork. All we had to do was show up and paddle. I can't rave enough about the food. It was delicious and there were lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Happy hour and fresh cake were definite treats. I would definitely recommend this trip to friends."  Ruth Kitchin -

WINTER BLUES IN loreto, baja california

In March and April, go where the whales go: Loreto Bay National Marine Park in the Sea of Cortez.  Here you’ll find endangered blue whales with mouths large enough to swallow a railroad boxcar, 40-foot-long humpbacks, 70-ton fin whales, hundreds of dolphins, pelicans and blue-footed boobies – and 72-degree water to snorkel in.

Get close to the action and be among the few to see the world's largest creature from a kayak.  A very sharp eye will also spot the occasional sea turtles and the elusive plankton-eating whale shark. Canyon hikes take you into the island’s desert interior past towering cacti and wild figs.  Jaunts with a snorkel and mask will yield endemic angelfish and reef fish the colors of the rainbow.  Spend nights camping in sheltered coves where volcanic rock juts into the sea, sipping margaritas on the beach at sunset, and viewing an impossible number of stars in the jet black sky.

Islands in the Sea of Cortez are often likened to the Galapagos Islands….uninhabited and pristine.  One third of the world’s whale species call the Sea of Cortez home and Loreto Bay National Marine Park is a hot spot for blue whales.  Kayak tours are available every week.

ISLA CARMEN

Tired of winter cold and snow? How does paddling in a warm climate, snorkeling over reefs teeming with fish and hiking desert canyons sound to you? Picture yourself in the Sea of Cortez, on a 9-day sea kayaking circumnavigation of Baja California’s best-kept secret - Isla Carmen, the largest island in Loreto Bay National Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although the nearby mission town of Loreto is popular with tourist, Isla Carmen remains mostly wild and untouched, plus, the marine life blows people away – over 280 species of reef fishes, as well as scores of dolphins, sea lions, and five of the big whale species ply the surrounding waters.  You can be among the few to paddle along Carmen’s rocky cliffs through crystal-clear water, coves with sandy beaches, reefs, and sea caves.

From your tented camps in sheltered coves, watch vermillion skies as they illuminate the banded layers of the Sierra de la Giganta range, the plume of a whale lingering in the still air, and leaping manta rays flopping back into the glassy water as guides dish out margaritas and tasty chili rellenos.

Discover why Outside Magazine rated our Carmen Island Circumnavigation kayak trip “one of the 25 best trips of a lifetime”.  March 31-April 10.
