New Trips in 2009

As we embark on our 16th year in business, we would like to say a special thank you to all of you who travel with us. We’re humbled and honored you chose to spend your vacation with us. Rest assured you can count on SKA when it comes to value for your dollar, experience, environmental responsibility, customer service, guides and equipment. In 2009 we’re reminding you of several outstanding new itineraries including:

  • Fjords of Baffin Island – a 12-day exploration of the Fjordland area to the west of Pond Inlet. This stretch of coastline offers impressive rock spires, towering sun bathed ice bergs and deep fjords dotted with small islands; as well as the possibility of seeing Narwhal and of course fantastic hiking opportunities. August 16-29. Cost: $4995 CND.
  • Queen Charlotte IslandsQueen Charlotte Islands -
this 10-day tour travels north from Ninstints, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the largest collection of standing totem poles in their original location in North America through the rich inter-tidal waters surrounding Burnaby Island to the marine mammal rich waters of Juan Perez Sound and finishing with a visit to Hot Spring island. August 12-21. Cost: $3000 CND.
  • Isla Carmen Circumnavigation – a one-of-a-kind kayaking, snorkeling and hiking 10-day adventure that will lead you off the beaten path and beyond the tourist beaches of Mexico to a wild Baja that few have seen. Listed as one of Outside Magazine's Best Trips of a Lifetime. Dates: April 19-30. Cost: $1695 USD.
  • Loreto Multi-Sport Adventure - includes three days of gray whale watching in Magdalena Bay from our exclusive island base camp, one day snorkeling in Loreto Bay National Marine Park, and one day sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. Dates: February and March. Cost: $1395, includes four nights hotel and two nights camping (or $895 for just the Gray Whale camp tour portion).

So whether you've traveled with us already, or you're considering joining SKA for the first time, come along for the journey -- no kayaking experience is necessary -- to share in exploring our most wild and wondrous places.

Active Adventure Trips in Baja Under $1,000

Sea Kayak Adventures is offering two trips in Baja this winter that are easy on your pocketbook. For less than $1,000 per person land-only with hotels and camping, you can paddle a kayak to remote islands in the Sea of Cortez, snorkel in aquamarine waters, and have an once-in-a-lifetime experience going eye-to-eye with a friendly gray whale. The trips meet in Loreto and details are below.

Baja Gray Whale Adventure -

Grey WhaleGo eye-to-eye with a 30-ton gray whale and its calf as they swim up alongside your boat on the wild western coast of Baja, Mexico. On SKA's three-day gray whale adventure you’ll spend several hours each day in a motorized skiff getting close to the whales, dolphins, and sea turtles that cruise along the bathwater-warm waterways of Baja California’s renowned Magdalena Bay, home to the highest concentration of nursing gray whales in North America. Next, you’ll enter a labyrinth of mangrove channels, past cacophonous heron rookeries and mudflats teeming with migrant shorebirds. Then it’s back on land to trek through the rolling sand dunes pausing for whalebones, and rare seashells to watch spouting grays as the sun sinks into the Pacific Ocean. At camp, biologist guides dish out tasty chili relleno, margaritas, and educational tidbits on whale natural history. Nights are spent in comfortable tents on a sandy barrier island, where the hollow sounds of whales breathing lull you to sleep. From January to March, hundreds of California gray whales arrive at this remote coast to mate and calve after a 5,000-mile journey from the icy waters of the Bering Sea. When to go: February-March. The price of $895 per person includes two nights’ hotel in Loreto; two nights camping in Mag Bay; all meals; all camping equipment; and guides. SKA donates a small portion of your trip cost to wildlife conservation groups in Baja. Afterward, go snorkeling through brilliant turquoise water in the Bay of Loreto National Marine Park in the Sea of Cortez ($95).

Sea of Cortez Kayaking Quick Adventure -

Quick AdventureSea Kayak Adventures is offering a four-day sea kayaking trip in Baja’s Sea of Cortez that cost less than a grand including two nights’ hotel in Loreto and three nights’ camping on secluded beaches in Loreto Bay National Marine Park. The Sea of Cortez has been declared a World Heritage Site and the waters surrounding the Park are a sanctuary for blue-footed boobies, fin and blue whales, dolphins and sea lions. Participants will paddle sea kayaks below towering volcanic cliffs amid sea caves and rocky reefs, get close to a 50-foot whale, trek cactus-studded arroyos and snorkel in crystal-clear bays. All activities are led by naturalist guides, who dish out tasty chile rellenos and margaritas in tented beach camps at days end. A support skiff carries the camp supplies including ice to keep the drinks cold.
When to go: March-April. Cost: $995.

Travel to Loreto, Mexico

For those of you who have recently read about crime along the USA-Mexico border or in mainland Mexico, we want to remind you that millions of U.S. Citizens safely visit Mexico each year, including our guests visiting the peaceful village of Loreto - located over 700 miles south of the border - where we operate our tours. We have had no issues in Loreto in our nearly 20 years operating tours there. Like most tourist destinations in Mexico, travel to Loreto is safe and enjoyable. Most people fly right to Loreto from Los Angeles. We drive our kayaks twice a year between Loreto and BC Canada and have never had an incident. Some of our guests elect to drive their own vehicles to Loreto and no one has ever reported an incident. We are happy to speak with you about any concern you may have - call us at 800-616-1943.

SKA will exhibit at travel shows March 2009

Call us for free tickets!  We'll be exhibiting at the huge paddle show "Canoecopia" at Madison WI March 14-15, in Calgary, Canada at the Stampede's Outdoor Adventure Travel Show March 28-29, 2009, and Tacoma WA paddling demo days in May 2009.
Hope to see you there!
