Baja Whale Watching
We design our whale watching adventures to provide you with the best whale encounters imaginable. Baja California, Mexico is a whale-watchers' paradise. There are few other places that harbor such a concentration and diversity of whales. The islands of Loreto Bay National Marine Park, located in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), are home to one third of the world's whale species, including blue, fin, Sei, humpback, sperm, Bryde's and pilot whales as well as common and bottlenose dolphins.
Magdalena Bay, located on Baja's Pacific Coast, is the world-renowned winter nursery grounds of the California Gray whale. Late January through early March, hundreds of gray whales mate and bear their young in these protected waters after traveling over 5000 miles from the Bering Strait. Experience one of the most incredible close-up wildlife encounters on the planet from our exclusive safari-style base camp situated on a secluded island beach at the very heart of whale activity in Magdalena Bay. Your guides, including marine biologist graduate students, will give entertaining, informative presentations on whale natural history.

Your adventure begins in charming Loreto, a former Jesuit mission town and short flight from southern California. From there you'll travel across the peninsula to the fishing village of Puerto Lopez Mateos on Magdalena Bay, board a licensed motorboat and head to the deeper parts of the bay to view whales in their natural habitat. Click here to view a video of a close encounter with a gray whale and her calf. We offer single and multi-day wilderness camping tours in the federally protected gray whale lagoons of Magdalena Bay and in the blue whale realm of the Sea of Cortez. Our most popular trip is a combination of the two areas. Click here to view a slide show of kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. Your guides are always ready to share their knowledge of the area, lead activities and prepare tasty meals with a Mexican flair. Join us in exploring this enchanting desert peninsula on one of our gray whale watching tours. "The whales were the highlight of the trip, but the rest of it was also great…it is a beautiful area and the guides were terrific. The most enjoyable part was watching the whales from our campsite and being so close to them" --Laurel Luby |
