Gray Whale Watching from La Paz near Puerto Chale

Every year, thousands of gray whales migrate from Arctic waters to Baja, where they find warm waters ideal for rearing their calves. This is the longest annual migration of any mammal on earth, and at our exclusive Puerto Chale Whale Camp you can experience one of the most incredible wildlife encounters on the planet. Our camp is located just to the south of Magdalena Bay, on the shores of Almejas Bay, one of the major calving lagoons for gray whales. The bay is partially sheltered and protected from the open waters of the Pacific Ocean by the islands of Margarita and Magdalena, making it an ideal winter nursery ground for the magnificent gray whales.

Our 3 and 4-day whale watching tours from La Paz are based at our secluded, safari-style camp set on the edge of on a pristine sandy beach, with dolphins offshore and distant mountains as your backdrop. Outfitted for comfort and adventure, the camp offers daily excursions to whale-rich waters, fascinating natural history talks, and, most importantly, unparalleled access to the whales.

During these naturalist-led whale watching trips, you witness individual whales swimming alone, as well as small pods of gray whales. Our small, comfortable boats are captained by local fishermen who know the area and understand the patterns and behavior of the whales. On every whale watching excursion, our naturalist guides accompany you to enrich your experience with their knowledge. They work with the boat captains to provide you the best in responsible whale watching. We always maintain a healthy distance from the whales, but a remarkable behavior of Baja's gray whales, is that they sometimes approach us and get quite close. They have the entire bay and sea to explore, yet they choose to approach, as if they want to get to know us. At times, the mother whales actually push their young up to the surface of the water, and sometimes even towards our whale watching boats. No one knows why they do this, but certainly some of their behavior is training and teaching their calves important skills for their long annual migration. Please note that our tours operate within all applicable laws of Mexico, aboard boats that are licensed specifically for whale watching activities.

Sea Kayak Adventures’ Puerto Chale Whale Camp provides all the gear and amenities you need for a comfortable wilderness experience. Our guides provide entertaining and informative presentations on whale natural history, plus there’s an extensive library with books on whales in our signature whale tent dome.

*Note: The first and last days for any Baja tour are arrival and departure days. Consider arriving a day or two early to enjoy a day swimming with whale sharks in the Gulf of California or further explorations around La Paz.

FAQ & More

How do I get to La Paz?

Getting to La Paz is easily via flying with Alaska Airlines, Delta, Volaris, and Aeromexico. There are flights available from Los Angeles and Mexico City. Please see our Baja Travel Guide for full details on travel to and from Baja. For more information on flying to La Paz see here

*As of November 2024, there is easy access to La Paz with new direct flights from Los Angeles to La Paz via Alaska Airlines!

When is the best time to see the Baja California Gray Whale migration?

The best time to see gray whales in Baja is from January to March as that is when their annual migration to birth and nurture their young occurs in the warm waters of Baja. We design our wilderness adventures to provide you with the best whale encounters imaginable. Magdalena Bay is a whale-watchers' paradise. The whales migrate down from their Alaskan home waters to calve in Magdalena Bay from January through mid-March, so this is the only window to see them in Baja.

How long are the whale watching sessions?

You will spend two-hour sessions on the water in motorized skiffs (called pangas) whale watching. Be ready to go immediately when the boat arrives to maximize your time out whale watching, as the 2-hour session starts promptly.

What is whale camp like? Are there toilets and showers at camp?

A roomy full-height wall tent with two cots, night stand, rectangular sleeping bag with clean sheet, small pillow, and comfortable self-inflating pad are provided for your convenience at camp. There is also a washroom tent with a portable toilet. We recommend packing biodegradable shower wipes to freshen up with as there is no fresh water at whale camp.

What kind of food will I eat? Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Our renowned wilderness meals are prepared daily by our guides using local, fresh, healthy ingredients. In Baja you can expect an authentic dining experience, with savory dishes like chiles rellenos, tostadas, ceviche, and chicken mole. We even serve delicious desserts like brownies and pineapple upside-down cake! Each morning, we serve up freshly brewed coffee or tea. Throughout the day we provide an abundance of local fruits, vegetables, and other snacks. Wine and mixed drinks are served with hors d’oeuvres each evening for happy hour.

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, working within the parameters of the destinations in which we operate. If you have a very strict diet, we recommend packing extra snacks that you know you can eat.

What is the difference between the Magdalena Bay South Camp and Magdalena Bay North Camp?

Both camps are beautiful!  We've been using our North camp for over two decades while our South Camp is new in 2026.  The North camp is set on a sand dune island and as part of our trip we walk across the island about 1/2 mile to the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.  The South Camp is set on the mainland and has more vegetation including mangrove trees growing in the water along the camp's edge.  It has a much smaller beach area than the North Camp.  At both camps we sometimes see dolphins swimming by, but at the North camp we may also see whales 100-200 yards off shore.  At the North Camp on day two we do a morning and afternoon whale watching session and return to camp for lunch.  At the South Camp on day two we go out for the day and have a picnic lunch on shore close to the whale watching area.
