Experience the magic of Baja on an unforgettable journey from La Paz that combines paddling through the turquoise waters of the Gulf of California with up-close encounters with gray whales in Magdalena Bay, near San Carlos. This is one of our most immersive Baja adventures designed for wildlife lovers, ocean paddlers, and those who want to truly connect with the rhythms of this spectacular desert-meets-sea landscape.

Begin your journey in La Paz, where your guides will prepare you for 5-days of sea kayaking around Isla Espíritu Santo, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its red rock cliffs, sea caves, remote beaches, and vibrant marine life. Paddle alongside playful dolphins, snorkel with colorful reef fish and a friendly colony of sea lions, and hike arroyos that reveal sweeping desert views. Evenings are spent camping on pristine beaches along the island under star-filled skies, enjoying freshly prepared meals and the camaraderie of your group.

Following your paddling journey, travel across the Baja Peninsula to the Pacific side, where you’ll spend 3-days at our exclusive southern whale camp on a remote beach in Almeja Bay, one of the most active areas in all of Magdalena Bay for gray whale sightings. Set against a backdrop of wide desert vistas and jagged mountains, this quiet southern lagoon is known for its high concentration of mother-calf pairs, and the chance to see breaching, spy-hopping, and even friendly whales approaching your panga for a curious look.

Beyond the whales, the area teems with wildlife. You may see shorebirds, dolphins feeding just offshore, and sunsets glow behind dramatic sand dunes. Our camp offers a front-row seat to it all, with expert naturalist guides leading daily whale watching sessions and wildlife interpretation.

This La Paz-based combo is one of the most unique and rewarding winter wildlife adventures in North America. All logistics, lodging, transportation, and equipment are included. You stay in a comfortable and local hotel between camp segments, with everything taken care of so you can simply soak up the magic. With passionate, english speaking local guides, small groups, and unforgettable encounters on land and sea, this is the Baja trip you’ll talk about for years.

Kayaking, Snorkeling, Hiking & Beach Life

Wake to the glow of sunrise and the aroma of coffee drifting through camp. After a hearty breakfast, we set out for a few hours of paddling each day, broken up with floating rest stops and a long mid-day break for lunch. Every evening, we land at a new stretch of coastline and set up camp on a different pristine beach.

The rhythm of island life blends exploration and relaxation: snorkel among tropical reef fish, hike arroyos and hidden canyons, or simply stretch out on the sand with a book. Your guides, who are naturalists and storytellers will share insights into the island’s unique desert ecosystem and its dramatic geology.

After dark, the show continues overhead as star-filled skies emerge in this light-pollution-free wilderness. Day 6

Journey to Magdalena Bay & First Whale Encounters

We depart from La Paz to cross the peninsula towards the southern reaches of Magdalena Bay. Upon arrival, we have an orientation to whale watching etiquette and soon thereafter we board a motorized skiff and head out for your first close-up with the gray whales that gather in these bays each winter. Their size, grace, and curiosity make for an unforgettable introduction.

After this initial outing, we continue to our secluded base camp, on the shores of the bay. Dolphins are sometimes spotted just offshore, a reminder that this is one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Your tent will already be set up when you arrive, so you can settle in quickly before enjoying a freshly prepared beachside lunch.

Later in the afternoon, head back out into the bay for another chance to observe whales at play. As the sun sinks toward the horizon, return to camp for happy hour and a hearty dinner.

Day 7

Gray Whales & Coastal Wildlife

Wake to the sight of dawn painting the bay and the aroma of hot coffee and breakfast being prepared by your guides. Before we head out, take a quiet stroll along the shoreline, scanning the horizon for whales spouting in the distance.

This morning we set off by skiff once more, spending the morning and afternoon with the gray whales. Calves and mothers often surface near the boats, offering extraordinary views of their gentle interactions. After a leisurely picnic lunch on a nearby shore, we continue our excursion to deepen your appreciation for these remarkable animals and their Baja nursery.

When not on the water, enjoy the rhythms of camp life: watch pelicans glide across the waves, explore the beach, or simply relax in a chair with the sea breeze as your soundtrack. Be sure to visit our unique whale dome tent, where interpretive displays provide fascinating context about the whales’ epic migrations.

Evening brings another wholesome dinner followed by a canopy of stars so bright they seem almost within reach.

Back in La Paz, check into your hotel and refresh after your days in the wild. We gather for an optional no-host farewell dinner, a lovely finale to an amazing week of kayaking, whales and wildlife.

Day 9

*Optional: Add a Day to Swim with Whale Sharks!

Extend your stay in La Paz before or after your kayak and whale watching combo tour for the unforgettable opportunity to swim alongside whale sharks. Despite their size, these gentle giants feed only on plankton and can grow up to 42 feet long, making them the largest fish in the sea. From October through April, they gather in the bay of La Paz, drawn by the abundance of food in its shallow waters.

Your day begins early as you meet your guides and head out onto the water in search of these incredible animals. The excursion lasts around four hours, giving you ample time to experience their calm presence before returning to shore. With your morning adventure complete, you’ll still have the afternoon free to wander La Paz’s lively malecón or relax by the waterfront.
